Mosaics Inspired by Nature: Creating Contemporary Art

What Delia Smith is to cookery for beginners, Rachel Davies is for anyone tempted to start making ungrouted mosaics, that’s to say, where you see only the tesserae, the pieces used. Ungrouted mosaics like these are virtually 3D, so we can enjoy slate or wood or marble or glass as they are in themselves, whereas grout of whatever colour makes a crucial difference to the look of a given mosaic.

The book comprises very helpful sections on materials, tools, substrates and adhesives; followed by methods & techniques, getting to know your materials, inspiration & designs from nature, and putting it all together. Finally, three projects: bark, lichen and seaweed. There also interviews with seven mosaic artists specialising in ungrouted mosaics. The many illustrations in Rachel Davies’s book are superb, and include plenty of steps-along-the-way that beginners will find most useful. Highly recommended.
