Appeal for the Restoration of Butterfield Mosaics

All Saints’ Church, Harrow Weald, England

Many visitors to All Saints’ Church comment on the beauty of the mosaic work above the chancel arch in the nave and the reredos on the east wall of the chancel. The mosaic work was made by Minton and fitted by Italian craftsmen in 1890. Most visitors are unaware that
the whole of the east wall in the chancel is covered with beautiful mosaic work to match that in the nave. To view the church visit:-

In the 1950s, a time when Butterfield was unappreciated, a radical reordering of the church was carried out. The mosaic work on the east wall of the chancel was covered in white paint and a curtain was hung below the window. For 45 years the reredos remained out of sight. It
is only in recent years that it has been unveiled and cleaned, and the skill and subtlety of its designer once more revealed.
The Friends of All Saints are organising a fund raising project on behalf of All Saints’ Church to clean the flaking white paint from the mosaics and restore the east wall of the chancel to its original beauty.

Fortunately the type of paint used to cover the mosaics has not caused any permanent damage, but the paint needs to be professionally removed at a cost of approx £12.000.

People are being offered the opportunity to sponsor the cleaning of small sections of the wall for £20 per section and may sponsor as many or as few sections as they wish. Some may wish to sponsor a section to commemorate a birth, baptism, confirmation, marriage, special
anniversary or a death. The names of people who have contributed to the restoration will be recorded along with any special commemoration in a framed list next to a picture of the restored mosaic work.

If you would like to contribute to this project please copy and fill in the slip below and return it with the money to: The Parish Office, 90 Uxbridge Road, Harrow Weald, Middlesex HA3 6DQ, England.
